Argyll and Bute

UK travel information

Fall under the spell of the charms of Argyll and Bute in Scotland with some of the best scenery in the United Kingdom. With places that have been immortalized in song such as the Mull of Kintyre and Loch Lomond the joy of walking in the Trossachs and visiting the islands off the coast is inspirational.

Argyll is an easy place to get to from Glasgow and is a world apart with glens, rivers and lakes. Walk along the shores of Loch Lomond or take a cruise on the water. Trace the footsteps of Scottish heroes like Robert the Bruce, and visit Loch Katrine which inspired Sir Walter Scott. Try a game of golf on the shores of Loch Lomond and visit one of the many whisky distilleries in the area.

Visitors come to this area for the outdoor activities like horse riding and sailing, and for bird watching. Look out for eagles and kestrels to name a few of the species living here.

Argyll and Bute

Take to boat to Bute and Jura with their wild rugged landscapes, and whisky with a distinctive peat taste. There are several castles in the area including Dunoon, Inverary and Rothesay Castle which are open to visitors. On Bute spend time at Mount Stuart House and Gardens.

The island has a 26 mile long distance route which will interest hikers. Look out for seals and dolphins off the coast, and enjoy the fresh fish in the many local restaurants in this peaceful part of Scotland which has seen history on its soil from Vikings to battles of the clans.

Visit Islay and Jura with their nature reserves, or go a little further to Mull and its mountainous landscape. Whether you cycle, walk or drive in Argyll and Bute the scenery will take your breath away in this stunning and unspoilt part of Scotland.
