Barnsdale Gardens

UK travel information

Located in Rutland, Barnsdale Gardens is a collection of 38 individual gardens designed using different themes, colours and plant types. It has been described as a 'theme park for gardeners' since it is full of imaginative ideas for visitors to recreate at home. The emphasis is on enabling visitors to just try new ideas in their gardens, and the 'Novice Garden' is an example of how a beautiful space can be created with next to no gardening knowledge! The 'Townhouse Garden' demonstrates how to make the most of a small yard, so Barnsdale Gardens is very much trying to cater for the modern UK gardener.

Barnsdale Gardens
The gardens were created by the well known TV gardener Geoff Hamilton, and the first garden is a memorial to him. It is intended to be a quiet, peaceful area, with a hand-carved bench and some of Hamilton's favourite species of plant. Other gardens include the Reclaimed Garden, made entirely from pre-used materials, the Wildlife Garden with its various habitats, pond and bird houses, and the tranquil Japanese Garden complete with wooden bridge.

The Cottage Garden, Country Garden and Elizabethan Garden ensure that more traditional tastes are also catered for. With 38 different gardens in total, there is a mix of colour, modern design, traditional design and of course, a huge variety of plant life.

The nursery at the gardens is where many of the plants are cultivated. Visitors are able to purchase their favourites from the gardens, to help them recreate the ideas they have seen. There is also a gift shop and tea room, serving light meals and snacks.

Barnsdale Gardens have been recognised by the Rutland Access Group for the efforts they make to ensure access for disabled visitors. There is disabled parking, toilets, ramped access and wheelchair loans. One of the 38 gardens is called 'Garden for the Less Able' and features low flower beds, long-handled tools and suitable places to sit.

The gardens can be reached by car, bus or train then taxi. The gardens can provide up to date details of routes and timetables.
