Blackpool Zoo

UK travel information

Blackpool Zoo was opened in 1972 and has been gradually extended so that it now houses over 1500 animals representing a large number of species. Among them are several large primates such as gorillas and orang utans, mammals, including African lions, many species of birds and reptiles. Informative talks giving details of the various animals and their habits are held throughout the day. The zoo is an ideal setting for its animals having 32 acres of mature parkland and lakes.

Blackpool Zoo

As well as living examples of exotic animals the zoo has a unique Dinosaur Safari, taking visitors back to the age of the largest creatures that have lived on earth. Planned to be educational as well as fun, this display features the best known prehistoric monsters and throws some light on what might have caused their extinction.

Blackpool Zoo is also well known for its Californian sea lions that have their own pool. The pool features a 250 seat arena where the sea lions perform each day for visitors to the zoo. Next door to the sea lion pool is the penguin enclosure which is raised above ground so that visitors can view the penguins swimming underwater through large glass windows. The zoo has the only specimens of the Magellanic penguins in Britain.

Disabled visitors can access all areas of the zoo and many of the enclosures have low level viewing windows. Wheelchairs are available for hire for a refundable deposit. Talking tours can be arranged for those with sight impairment as well as signing tours for the deaf. These need to booked at least a week prior to the intended visit.

For eating and drinking there is a large family restaurant serving hot and cold meals and a coffee shop serving light refreshments. There are also many picnic tables around the zoo for those who prefer to bring their own food.

A well stocked gift shop offers gifts and souvenirs to suit all pockets.

Being situated just on the outskirts of Blackpool, it is possible to combine a visit to the zoo with a visit to the many attractions of Blackpool itself.  These include Louis Tussauds, the Tower Ballroom and circus, and the fun park.
