Cardigan

The town of Cardigan is located within the county of Ceredigion, Mid Wales, on the estuary of the River Teifi.

Predominantly a Welsh-speaking community, Cardigan is a quaint and picturesque town, with many quirky, independent shops as well as some well-known names and features a number of attractions that would make any visit more than worthwhile. Cardigan Castle, the first motte-and-bailey castle, became the site of the first competitive Eisteddfod, a festival of literature, music and performance.

The castle is a great example of architecture and is currently the subject of a campaign to save the remains. Cardigan is also home to a Roman Catholic Shrine that has been the subject of legend in Cardigan for quite some time. It was said that the statue of the Virgin Mary held a candle whose flame never extinguished and is now known as the “Shrine to Our Lady of the Taper”.

Opened in 1993 and already the recipient of an award for architectural design, the Welsh Wildlife Centre at Cilgerran offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view over the Teifi River and beyond.

Constructed primarily of wood and glass, the centre contains an interactive indoor display of local and natural history relevant to the region.
