Channel Islands

UK travel information

The Channel Islands lie in the English Channel off the French coast of Normandy, resulting in a unique culture and heritage with both English and French influences. The islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm are known as the main islands, but Jethou, Brecqhou and Lihou are also inhabited islands.

Channel Islands
The island of Jersey is known for its versatility from the cosmopolitan city life in St. Helier and the trendy restaurants to the country lanes and quaint cafes. The majority of Jersey is peaceful countryside surrounded by the stunning sandy beaches along the coastline. There are a number of family attractions on Jersey like the Military Museum, Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Elizabeth Castle, although many people visit for a relaxing getaway from the stresses of everyday life.

St. Peter Port is the capital on Guernsey and is a bustling harbour town with quaint streets lined with restaurants and cafes, while the rolling countryside and beautiful beaches are the perfect spots for lazy days.

Life on Guernsey is centred around the outdoors, whether it’s exploring the rugged coastline on foot or bike, taking part in watersports or simply chilling out. Of course, the family will love the attractions on offer like the German Occupation Museum, La Vallette Underground Museum and Hospital, and Guernsey Aquarium.

If you’re looking for a quieter pace of life, Alderney is one of the Channel Islands that has escaped mainstream tourism, which means it is relatively untouched. Of course, you could explore the amazing coastline and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, but you’ll also want to visit the Alderney Lighthouse and the Alderney Museum, all great ways of making the most of your visit. The island of Herm is a tiny island where there are no cars and life is all about relaxation, take a day trip here for the stunning scenery and beaches. Sark is similar to Herm but is smaller and it’s the perfect place to relax with the most beautiful surroundings and simple way of life.
