Isle of Mull

UK travel information

The Isle of Mull is the second largest island in the Inner Hebrides and the fourth largest Scottish island. It sits off the western coast of Scotland and has dramatic scenery with 300 miles of coastline from rugged rock faces to golden sandy beaches.

Isle of Mull
In the centre of the island it is mainly mountainous with the highest peak being Ben More, reaching over 3000ft, while heading out towards to the coast sees predominantly moorland before the rugged cliffs or sandy beaches.

The main town on the Isle of Mull is Tobermory and is best known as being the setting for the popular children’s BBC programme Balamory, featuring the colourfully painted houses in Tobermory, which attracts plenty of tourists to the island. Some scenes from the Harry Potter films were also filmed in the east of the island.

The Isle of Mull boasts amazing wildlife including over 250 different species of birds, as well as whales, dolphins and porpoises, which can easily be spotted by taking one of the many coastal or inland walks or venturing out on a boat trip.  The coastal walks on the Isle of Mull take in the Carsaig Arches to the south, passing under some of the highest cliffs in Britain, as well as the dramatic MacKinnon’s Cave.

For the more daring, you’ll find lots of scuba diving opportunities among the several shipwrecks. Then there’s the nine hole golf course in Tobermory set high on the cliffs with the most amazing panoramic views.

With such a variety of coastlines, the Isle of Mull offers sweeps of golden sands like Kilvickeon Beach, Uisken Beach and Market Bay, while Laggan Sands is the best for wildlife spotting. For a little more culture, you’ll be intrigued by the 13th century Duart Castle in Lochdon and the beautiful Victorian Torosay Castle and Gardens.
