Leicestershire

UK travel information

Leicestershire has some of the most beautiful rural scenery in England as well as industrialized urban areas. The city of Leicester has a number of historic buildings in the centre and an excellent shopping area. Leicester has one of the largest South Asian populations in England and as such the restaurants in the city are excellent places to taste Gujarati and other Indian cuisines. Many people come to Leicester for the annual Mela festivals celebrated by the Indian community.

The home of the National Space Centre is in Leicester and a fascinating place for families to visit. The Science Museum in Snibston is another popular attraction in the area. Leicestershire is also known for Melton Mowbray, a traditional market town with local shops and best known as makers of authentic pork pies.

Leicestershire

Leicestershire is also home to the famous Stilton cheese which is made in the area. A number of spas are available in the county for pampering breaks. Historic Belvoir Castle is another popular attraction.

The towns of Market Harborough, Hinckley and Loughborough are all charming local centres and traditional towns. Look out for the tiny villages throughout the countryside with immaculate gardens and village greens. The Battle of Bosworth was fought in Leicestershire and the site can be visited. Walk around some of the key areas and imagine how things were in 1485 when Richard III was killed. The flat terrain is excellent for both cycling and walking, on marked trails to historical sites and to rural areas. Try the National Forest for some walks and outdoor activity at Conkers.

Leicestershire is known for its excellent food production and for its history and diversity and makes an excellent place to explore as part of a holiday.
