EAT! Newcastle Gateshead, June

UK travel information

EAT! NewcastleGateshead, the festival of adventures in food and drink, was established in 2007 by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, and directed by food consultant Simon Preston, to raise the profile of the food industry in the North East, and to promote healthy eating to young people. The festival presents a unique opportunity for people of all ages to discover and enjoy British food culture through a sixteen day programme taking place in Newcastle, Gateshead and across the North East. EAT! is a regional festival with a national reputation for innovation that celebrates the many ways in which good food can enhance our lives, and aims to develop local children’s understanding of and love for good food.

This year EAT! exerted an even bigger pull than ever on visitors by opening with a Big EAT! Weekend of free and ticketed events taking over the City Centre and including: Food Heroes Tasting Market (60 producer stalls of the best food and drink from the North East); chefs demonstration theatre; Street Food, Beer, Cup Cake, Whisky, Wine and Chilli Festivals; fresh fish from Amble landed and sold on the Quayside; IncrEdible North East (an educational exploration of all that grows in the North East) and the Food Adventure Playground, featuring the interactive Tunaversity Challenge and Stockpot games.

Favourites such as the FOUND foraging trips, Secret Paladares - secret restaurants in people’s homes, The Great North Eco-Feast where all produce is local, organic and sustainable returned, with new events including Cakebook (a web based project to create a map of NewcastleGateshead from cake and then build it at a ‘flash picnic’), The Pearly Diner (a restaurant with no menu, where guests order and enjoy their ultimate meal) and Artisan House Party (where house party guests learned artisan food skills at Tupperware-style home parties).

EAT! takes place annually during June. There is easy access from across the country into Newcastle Central Station and a huge choice of local accommodation where you can stay during the event.
