Panis cafe, Newcastle upon Tyne
It is rather unexpected to find a genuine Italian cafe in the North-East of England but down an alleyway, just off Newcastle’s Grey Street, is Panis. Run by an Italian family of six brothers and sisters, Panis feels like it had been transplanted from Italy to the North-East. The cafe appears small at the front but it opens up at the back to a much larger dining area. The restaurant is always buzzing; students chatting over coffee, couples enjoying lunch and large families with a plethora of children.
The menu reflects the family’s background, with a large number of regional Sardinian specialities. It is open for lunch and for dinner: the menu changes slightly in the evening with more dishes on offer. For lunch you can enjoy a range of ciabattas from the classic mozzarella, tomato and pesto to mortadella with rocket and tomatoes. There’s also a large range of pastas served for lunch, with lasagne, ravioli and melanzana alla parmigiana.
In the evening the prices increase slightly but still remaining very reasonable. In addition to a selection of pasta there is a range of chicken cooked in different ways and also a list of Panis specialities which features a number of dishes made with fregula - a short dry pasta typical of Sardinia.
The wine list also reflects the owners’ heritage. The wines are specially selected from Sardinian growers and imported by Panis themselves. And if all of this food and wine is making you fall in love with all things Italian, Panis offer free Italian lessons on Monday nights.
Located near the Theatre Royal and with excellent access to Monument Metro Station, Panis cafe is the perfect location for an Italian cafe at the heart of Newcastle.
