The Burrell Collection

UK travel information

The Burrell Collection is a collection of art treasures amassed by wealthy ship owner Sir William Burrell It was donated to the city of Glasgow in 1944. There was a great deal of controversy over where the collection should be located and, eventually, it was agreed that a purpose-built museum should be constructed to house the collection. This was built in the grounds of Pollok Country Park, about three miles south of the city centre.

This collection includes Chinese porcelain and jade, mediaeval furniture, paintings by Renoir and Cézanne, tapestries, stained glass (reputedly one of the best collections in the country), church art, silver, bronzes, Persian and Indian rugs, Egyptian statuettes, Greek and Italian pottery, needlework, arms and armour. The floors are carpeted so that visitors can contemplate the art treasures without the distraction of noise.

Some of the galleries are reconstructions of rooms from Hutton Castle, the former home of Sir William Burrell.

For many visitors the mezzanine area, which is home to the collection of paintings, will be the highlight of their visit. It is a small part of the overall collection, but for those interested in the work of the French impressionists, possibly the most important part. The mezzanine floor is also interesting because of the views it gives of many of the ground floor galleries.

An effort has been made to make the building harmonise with the collection as much as possible and this extends to such things as architectural features from the collection that have been integrated into the structure of the building.

In addition to the items already mentioned there is also a collection of Islamic art, and modern sculptures including works by Epstein and Rodin.

Facilities for visitors include a restaurant, shop, toilets including disabled and baby changing rooms. There is wheelchair access to all the public areas.

In the grounds of the Pollock Country Park, where the Burrell Collection Museum is located, there are formal and informal gardens and woodland walks. Pollock House is also situated here and it is possible to combine a visit to the two museums.
