The Walker Art Gallery

UK travel information

The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool was built in the 1870s and has a large collection of paintings and sculpture from the 14th century to the present day.

Some of the most popular items in the collection include paintings by David Hockney, Claude Monet, J M W Turner, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Frederic Leighton.

The Walker Art Gallery has works from all periods from the 14 century to the present but of particular interest is the 17th century collection of Dutch landscapes and portraits. This period also contains works from Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Murillo.

Nearer to the present there is a growing collection of 20th century paintings including works by Sickert, Sargent, Forbes, Waterhouse, Lavery, Lowry, Nash, Hockney, Freud, Moore and Sutcliffe.

A relatively recent feature is the Big Art for Little Artists gallery. This is aimed at children and there are games, dressing-up and art activities. There is also a gallery trail that starts in Big Art and then visits the main galleries, looking at artworks of particular interest to younger visitors.

As well as the permanent displays there is a regular programme of special events including workshops, talks and study days. These events are free as is entry to the art gallery itself.

There is a cafe with special children’s menus and a gift shop selling postcards, books and souvenirs. The cafe also has a free wi-fi connection.

The collections in the gallery are spread across two floors. The first floor covers art from the 13th century to the present day, from Old Masters to Pre-Raphaelite artists. There is easy access for wheelchairs and there is a lift between floors.

The Walker Art Gallery is easy to reach as it is in Liverpool city centre, close to the Queensway Tunnel and Lime Street Station. For visitors arriving by train The Walker is just a short walk from Liverpool Lime Street station - Liverpool's mainline train station.

If travelling by bus The Walker is within walking distance of the bus stations at Queen Square and the Paradise Street Interchange.
