Tonbridge

The pretty market town of Tonbridge in Kent is often confused with Tunbridge Wells; the fact that the latter is just a few miles distant does not help the matter, but the two are distinct towns.

Like many towns Tonbridge is at a place that made a sensible crossing point on a river – this time the Medway – and has been in existence in some form for at least 1000 years. Of particular note and interest to visitors is Tonbridge Castle, a typical fortified castle built originally in the 11th century and of which the gatehouse is the notable remaining section. Oast Houses, and also offers many modern shops for the visitor to browse, while there are many traditional pubs and cafes suitable for taking a well earned rest. Easily accessible by road from the A21, Tonbridge also boasts the busiest railway station in Kent, this being a very important junction with lines to London and elsewhere.

A traditional ‘Motte and Bailey’ castle most favoured by the Normans, Tonbridge’s fortress was constructed not long after the Battle of Hastings to protect the invaders from unwanted attention.

Visited by King Edward I prior to his coronation, the castle passed through successive hands until it was eventually sold to Tonbridge Urban District Council in 1898.
