All of Britain’s mountains are wonderful to climb and explore but please be aware that the weather can change in an instant and having the wrong gear or no gear can turn a simple walk into a tragedy. If you have no experience of walking in the mountains, arrange a guided walk with a qualified guide. Wear proper walking boots. Sandals and flip flops are totally unsuited to these environments but each year day trippers continue to walk in them and invariably slip. Check the weather forecast before you go and plan your day based on those conditions. Take spare warm clothing, waterproofs, and a map of the area, a whistle, food, drink, a survival bag, and a compass. Make sure you learn some basic navigation skills before walking in mountainous environments and tell someone where you are going. Don’t rely on cell phones in the mountains, very often the signal does not work. If the weather deteriorates, turn back.
